Smart homes save energy and heat, which is why they are eco-friendly and can even be cheaper to live in. If user can track the energy usage of their homes through smart phones, the existence of switches might become obsolete in the future. Thus, How can we bridge the relationship between analogue and digital interface in order to craft meaningful experiences? Since tactility is still an important factor to humans, instead of having a passive digital experience, adding a tangible experience may reinforce the aim of energy efficiency – making the user feel more satisfied.


Introducing Pulse
Humanised switch. It emulates the human pulse to represent the life of the appliance. This aims to evoke empathy from the user, making them more mindful about their energy consumption. The form language and CMF are designed to be inviting, comfortable and blend easily into the home environment.

With the current switches, the exterior CMF is mostly functional. It is rarely designed to evoke emotions. Thus with this redesign, it explores the possibility of transforming a mundane interface to resonate with user on an emotional level using analogy.
Empathetic.
By using an analogy that users are familiar with in different contexts, the need of conserving energy can be amplified. By helping users to draw connections between the two situations, can help them be more empathetic towards the cause.
Accountable.
It is difficult to upkeep with a new habit and stick to it. Through introduction some level of gamification & accountability, it can help the user switch & retain their habit as part of their lifestyle.
Pulse App
Paired with the app, pulse delivers a holistic solution that integrates into the user’s lifestyle. User can track daily usage and set consumption limits. They can also review their family and friends’ score in order to reflect on their energy consumption and aim to reduce it.
